“Life is amazing. Then its awful. Then its amazing again. And in between the amazing and awful is the ordinary and mundane and routine. Breathe in the amazing, hold on through the awful, and relax and exhale during the ordinary. That’s just living heartbreaking, soul-healing, amazing, awful, ordinary life. And its breathtakingly beautiful” L R Knost

This. This is why I do what I do. This is what my heart longs to document. True, raw and real human connection. Honest love. I met Dannielle and Luke 2 weeks before their wedding. Due to her recent cancer diagnosis they decided to not wait any longer and to just get married. Because after all, it was about their love and commitment, not a wedding. They invited their loved ones to ‘pre-chemo’ party and surprised everyone by getting married. It was so intimate, sweet and personal. And of course there wasn’t a dry eye in the house, including mine. But in my defense I am pregnant, I cry all the time :) These guys know loss. I’m not going to share their personal losses but I will share this. I spent time photographing them as a couple a couple of weeks before the day. Of course as I document a couple we chat about things, about life, connect. But at the wedding I learnt something huge that had happened to her family. I was floored that she hadn’t mentioned it while we were talking in-depth about life previously. But you know what, this is what is so wonderful about her. Life’s shitty moments don’t rule her thoughts or actions. Not once during the night did the ‘C’ word get mentioned. It was only about them and their honest love. From a photography perspective it was terrible conditions to shoot in. But again, this wasn’t about getting the most staged and perfectly lit images. It was about truthfully documenting this honest moment. It wasn’t about a portrait session with the bride and groom after the ceremony. In fact, we spent five minutes taking a few photos outside the front of the venue in the dark with the street light afterwards. Dannielle, may we all learn from your passion to love and live. Keep on fighting the good fight xxxx
