The image in the album was taken on Friday the 13th October, 1972. This, right here, was the beginning of my family being made. The bride and groom are my mum and dad. It wasn’t just an ordinary wedding. It was a double wedding of two sisters marrying two brothers. How cool is that?! I have told this awesome family fact many times in my life, as well as looked at their wedding album over, over and over again. And that was before they passed away. Since my mum and dad have passed away these photos (as well as the boxes of family photos I am eternally grateful for) have become so much more than pretty photographs in an album. They are the history that came before me, the love story of my mum and dad. The boxes of photographs are the memory triggers of what were most likely monotonous days for my mother, yet for me and my siblings wildly wonderful and adventurous days. I wonder sometimes if she knew what she was doing then, creating an everlasting fountain of memories for us? A visual legacy? I guess what I’m trying to describe is how they make me feel and how important they are to me. Photographs matter. Deeply matter. Maybe you don’t think they are worth it now but I promise you with my whole heart those after you will think they are. Invest in your visual legacy, you won’t be sorry.
